Term of Avgorou
Avgorou is one of the villages that have more history and tradition. “Avgo” in Greek means egg and more people believes that it took its name from eggs but this is wrong! It took its name from its past history that it has. There are two scenarios from which Avgorou took its name.

Let’s refer to the first scenario; some time ago, someone arrived at the bottom of a hill out of the village who was searching for the village of his relatives. Then he found one herdsman who said to him that the village of his relatives is behind the hill. Also, to say in Cyprus dialect “to pass the hill” you can say “na vgo tou orou”. Therefore, from this expression we took the name “Avgorou” for the village.

Let’s refer to the second scenario; King of Salamina, Evagoras, had selected this village because of its beautifulness and its excellent germination to do his baths. Therefore, the village first took the name “Evagorou” but after many years was finally renamed “Avgorou”.

Traditional House in Avgorou
With the term “Traditional House”, we mean the houses that developed in the village in early ages of this century. Traditional houses were developed with practical mode just to supply the people needs. These houses were built for the people, their animal s(sheep, chickens) and also their traps. There was only one room to do these things! Also, people believed that their house was very comfortable!! The doors were low and because of that, the visitors would bow their heads when they passed them, to show that they held the person who owned the house in high esteem. Usually there would be a big yard with a traditional kiln for cooking food and baking bread and various trees.
